Spurbeck was a member of Co H 325 Inf. 82 Division and was in a number of principal battles among which were the Argonne and St. Mickiel In the first named engagement he was gassed but on recovering surrifiently again took his place in the front line and at St. Michiel he was badly shell shocked to these two casualties the poor condition of his health was attributed. He returned home in May 1919 to take up privat life again but during depression worried over finances and ill health shot himself in his barn on the farm during melancholia
