“1st enlistment 08-9-1862, disch. 9-2-1863, 2nd enl 9-2-64 disch 6-27-65, during first enlistment he served on the USS Ohio Princeton Juniata and Hendrick Hudson. 2nd enlistment on the USS Vandalia, Beauregard and Somerset.

Born in Keene, NH May 1844. Had two enlistment in the USN One son George Bates of Waverly Ia the only child. Served as marine Landsman. Married Ella Brown at Keen N. H. 1863. Came to Waverly Ia 1876. For sometime previous to his death he lived separately by himself. He died from taking an overdose of medicine which he named in a note left at time of his death. He was a man of quiet dispostion and well thought of among his comrades and friends.
