Thomas Fortner and Margaret Hill who came to Franklin Twp in 1854 one of the early pioneer families of our county. Then when was was declared he was first rejected but later enlisted in 1st Batt’y of Iowa Light Art. as 7th Corp 2-4-1864 from Waverly. Discharged from Davenport 7-5-1865. Was wounded in thigh may 22-1864. near atlant Ga. made lame for life from which he was discharged. Returnin home he farmed for a time but came to Waverly to assist a brother Am. Fortner in conducting a hotel and rooming house. He never married.
