When a young man he owned and operated a number of small boats on the Erie canal. he moved to Dane Co. Wis in 1851, became a farmer. Enlisted in 1861, made captain in 1863 and was in every engagement in which his regiment fought. In one battle all were killed or wounded in his company except 8 men.
