Expanded Emergency Veteran Needs
Bremer County Veterans Affairs has a very limited budget to assist those veterans in dire need and therefore, do not provide handouts. Instead, we offer a helping hand to get veterans back on their feet and point them in the right direction so they, hopefully, do not find themselves in the same situation. Because of our limited budget, we often call upon our community partners and individuals to help assist those veterans who require more than we're able to provide.

Memorial Plaques
In 2012, the Bremer County Commission on Veterans Affairs thought that the list of those service members who gave their lives to their country should be updated and moved from the Board of Supervisors conference room to a location more visible to the general public. Enlisting the assistance of volunteer historical researchers and genealogists in the community, we set to the task of updating the lists. Our intention is for Dan Hatala, renowned artist and Waverly resident, to more appropriately honor those soldiers, sailors, Marines, and airmen who died serving their country.

Veteran Gravesite Research and Geo-Mapping
Beginning in the spring, 2013, we began a volunteer project to locate, research and geo-map every veteran grave within the county. Since most, if not all, work on this project is done after normal business hours, we continue to rely on volunteers to successfully complete this project. The ultimate goal of the project is to identify veterans buried within the county that do not have their final resting places marked. We fully intend to mark each grave with a government issued headstone if a private stone is not already in place. Additionally, our goal is to mark each veteran grave with a county issued grave marker that is usually issued at the time of the veterans death. Finally, we wish to research each veterans service to develop both a macro and micro vision of our veterans.

The Bremer County VA Van FY 2014
The close of the 2013 fiscal year proved to be a thankful one with a 58% increase in charitable donations for the VA Van. In all, $2,097 was gifted by the residents and service organizations of Butler and Bremer Counties. Letters have already been sent out to our service organizations in the hopes of reaching the $2,616 required for the van. Overall, the van made 134 trips for 26,138 miles and our volunteers donated over 860 hours of their time to support our local veterans.
